Afghanistan, Sept. 13 -- An Iranian commercial vessel was struck by a projectile near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz early Sunday, killing one crew member and injuring three others, Iranian authorities said, in the latest maritime incident to heighten tensions in the strategically vital Gulf waterway.
Hossein Amirteymouri, governor of Qeshm County, said the attack occurred near Hengam Island and the Sheyb Deraz coastal area of Qeshm Island, close to one of the world's busiest maritime chokepoints for global oil and gas shipments. Iranian state media described the incident as a "terrorist" attack, but officials said the type of projectile and those responsible had not yet been identified.
