Afghanistan, March 5 -- Abbas Araghchi said an Iranian naval frigate was struck by the United States in international waters without prior warning, calling the attack a "major disaster."

In a message posted Thursday on X, Araghchi said the Iranian warship Dena was attacked about 2,000 miles from Iran's coast while sailing in international waters.

He said the vessel was visiting the Indian Navy and was carrying about 130 crew members when it was targeted, warning that Washington would "deeply regret" the precedent set by the strike.

Officials in Sri Lanka said Wednesday the Iranian warship was attacked off the country's coast, leaving at least 80 crew members dead and several others injured.
