Afghanistan, July 27 -- Iran will independently decide whether to continue fighting or pursue peace, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Monday, rejecting any attempt by the United States to determine when Tehran should negotiate or end the conflict.

Baghaei said the United States had initially expected Iran's government to collapse and surrender within three days after the start of what Tehran describes as a joint U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.

"The United States thought the Islamic Republic would collapse and surrender within three days," Baghaei said, according to Iranian media reports. He added that, months later, Washington had become "trapped" in the situation while continuing to defend its actions.
