Afghanistan, April 25 -- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says Ukraine cannot join the EU soon but supports deeper cooperation and limited institutional participation.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Ukraine's rapid accession to the European Union is not feasible, while emphasizing the need for closer cooperation with Kyiv.

Speaking after an informal EU leaders' meeting in Nicosia, Merz said it is widely understood that immediate membership for Ukraine is not realistic under current conditions.

He added that Germany supports greater Ukrainian participation in EU structures, including attendance at selected meetings, but without voting rights.
