Afghanistan, June 27 -- Health authorities across Europe remained on high alert on Friday as an unprecedented heatwave pushed temperatures to record levels, overwhelmed emergency services and disrupted transport across several countries.

Scientists said the current heatwave is among the most severe ever recorded in Europe, where temperatures are rising faster than the global average because of climate change.

In France, Health Minister Stephanie Rist warned the extreme heat would "undoubtedly" lead to more deaths. Emergency physicians reported a sharp rise in medical calls, with officials in Paris saying 55 people receiving emergency care died within 24 hours.
