Afghanistan, June 10 -- The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported 598 confirmed Ebola cases, with 115 deaths recorded since the latest outbreak was officially declared in May, health authorities said on Tuesday.
Officials said 22 patients have recovered, but warned that the virus had circulated undetected for several weeks before being identified, complicating efforts to contain its spread.
The outbreak has affected the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu, regions already plagued by armed conflict and insecurity. Authorities said cases have been recorded in 17 health zones in Ituri, seven in North Kivu and one in South Kivu.
