Afghanistan, Oct. 7 -- Christa Pike, a 50-year-old Tennessee death-row inmate who survived a failed lethal-injection execution last week, is now conscious and speaking, her attorneys said, as she continues to receive critical medical care.

Pike was subjected to two doses of the lethal-injection drug pentobarbital on September 30 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, but survived the procedure. She was initially unconscious, intubated and placed on a ventilator before being transferred to a hospital. Her lawyers said Tuesday that her recovery is medically unprecedented, although her long-term prognosis remains unclear and she is expected to face a lengthy recovery.
