Afghanistan, April 20 -- China expressed concern over the U.S. interception of an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, urging all sides to act responsibly and uphold the ceasefire.

Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Monday that the situation in the strait is "sensitive and complex," calling for restraint.

He said parties involved should avoid further escalation and help restore normal navigation through the vital shipping lane.

The comments follow reports that the United States military fired on and seized an Iranian cargo ship accused of attempting to bypass a naval blockade.

Iran confirmed the vessel had been travelling from China and condemned the action as "armed piracy," vowing retaliation.
