Afghanistan, June 3 -- At least 21 people were killed and more than 40 rescued after a fire swept through a hotel in southern New Delhi, making it one of the deadliest fire incidents in the Indian capital in recent years, police said.

Authorities said rescue teams pulled dozens of people from the building after the blaze broke out late Tuesday. Television footage showed flames and thick smoke engulfing parts of the hotel as emergency crews battled the fire.

According to police, the hotel is located in a densely populated neighborhood popular with students and young professionals.

Jitender Kumar, a local official, said investigators believe the fire may have started in a restaurant operating on the ground floor of the building.
