Afghanistan, June 8 -- A powerful earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, killing at least 15 people, damaging buildings and prompting tsunami warnings across parts of Asia before most alerts were later lifted.

The United States Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck near the island of Mindanao shortly before 7:40 a.m. local time. Philippine authorities reported more than an hour of aftershocks following the main quake.
