Afghanistan, June 18 -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed two new polio cases in Afghanistan, raising the total number of infections recorded in the country this year to six.

The World Health Organization says two new cases of wild poliovirus have been detected in Afghanistan, underscoring continuing challenges to eradicating the disease in one of the last countries where polio remains endemic.

According to the latest WHO bulletin, the new cases were identified in Nari district of Kunar Province and Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand Province. Symptoms reportedly appeared on April 14 and May 7, respectively.
