Afghanistan, June 2 -- Afghanistan imports about 80% of its electricity, with more than 90% of those imports coming from Central Asian countries and the remainder supplied by Iran, according to a new report by the United Nations Development Programme.

The agency said Afghanistan remains highly dependent on imported energy, leaving the country vulnerable to supply disruptions, regional tensions and fluctuations in electricity prices.

According to the report, only 35% to 40% of Afghanistan's population has access to the national power grid. Access is significantly higher in urban areas, where about 90% of residents have electricity, compared with only around 10% in rural regions.
