Afghanistan, May 17 -- Supreme Court of Afghanistan announced on Sunday that the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah was not sighted in Afghanistan, setting Wednesday next week as the first day of Eid al-Adha.

In a statement, the court's central moon-sighting committee said reports received from several provinces confirmed that the Dhul Hijjah crescent was not visible on Saturday evening.

According to the announcement, Sunday was declared the final day of Dhul Qa'dah, while Monday, corresponding to May 18, will mark the first day of Dhul Hijjah in Afghanistan.

The court added that Tuesday will be observed as the Day of Arafah, with Eid al-Adha celebrations beginning nationwide on Wednesday.
