Afghanistan, Aug. 19 -- Afghanistan on Wednesday, August 19, marked the 107th anniversary of its independence, commemorating the end of British control over the country's foreign policy following the Third Anglo-Afghan War in 1919.

The Third Anglo-Afghan War began in May 1919 during the reign of King Amanullah Khan and ended with a ceasefire after several weeks of fighting. The Rawalpindi Agreement, signed in August that year, formally ended the conflict and paved the way for Afghanistan to conduct its foreign relations independently.
