Afghanistan, July 12 -- An Afghan mother was killed at her home in Sherbrooke, in Canada's Quebec province, on Thursday evening, and her 18-year-old son has been charged with second-degree murder. Within a day, a detailed but unverified account of what led to her death began spreading on social media.

The family is originally from Afghanistan, according to members of the Afghan community in Canada. Canadian police have not commented publicly on the family's background. Sherbrooke is home to the second-largest Afghan community in Quebec after the Montreal area and has received Afghan refugee families since the Taliban takeover in 2021, according to Radio-Canada.
