Afghanistan, July 3 -- At least 40 people were killed and eight others injured after a passenger bus veered off a mountain road and plunged into a ravine in southwestern Pakistan on Friday, officials said.
The bus was traveling from Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, to Peshawar when it crashed in the mountainous Dana Sar area of Zhob district, according to local authorities.
Sanaullah Shirani, head of the district emergency center, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the bus fell approximately 21 to 24 meters into the ravine.
Shahid Rind, spokesperson for the Balochistan provincial government, said preliminary findings indicate the driver lost control of the speeding bus near the border with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
