Afghanistan, Oct. 6 -- Iowa and 30 other US states have urged the US Supreme Court to review a case involving about $3.5 billion in Afghanistan central-bank assets that victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks are seeking to use to satisfy court judgments against the Kabul administration.
The states filed an amicus brief on October 5 in support of a petition by 9/11 victims and their families, arguing that US law allows assets belonging to a party responsible for terrorism to be used to satisfy judgments obtained by victims. The states say the plaintiffs hold roughly $17 billion in final judgments against the Taliban.
