Srinagar, May 25 -- Police on Monday arrested one of the accused in the rape and murder case of a 12-year-old girl in central Kashmir's Budgam district, officials said.

A senior police officer said the accused, identified as Mudasir, was arrested within 24 hours of the incident.

"Efforts are on to arrest the other accused persons involved in the case," the officer said.

He said police would ensure strict punishment for those involved in the crime.

The girl had gone missing from the Galwanpora area of Budgam on May 23. Her body was recovered from a field near the village the next day, triggering outrage and protests in the area.

Police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.(KNS).
