Srinagar, June 16 -- The New of Islamic Calendar, Muharram-ul-Haram, will commence in Jammu and Kashmir from Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

This announcement was made by the Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi, here on Monday.

The Grand Mufti said that no authentic or credible reports of crescent moon sighting were received from any part of the Jammu and Kashmir on Monday evening and therefore, the first day of Muharram-ul-Haram will be observed on June 17, Wednesday.

He extended greetings to the Muslim Ummah on the advent of the Islamic New Year, praying for peace, prosperity and communal harmony across Jammu and Kashmir and beyond.
