Srinagar/Jammu, April 4 -- Mild earthquake tremors were felt in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday night, triggering panic among residents, though no loss of life or damage to property was immediately reported.
According to officials, the tremors were felt around 9:45 pm in Srinagar, Jammu, Baramulla, Anantnag, Kupwara, Budgam and several other areas of the Union Territory.
An official said the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale.
He said the epicentre of the quake was in Afghanistan at latitude 36.398 degrees north and longitude 70.878 degrees east, with a depth of 150 kilometres.
Many residents rushed out of their homes as the tremors lasted for a few seconds.
