TOKYO, April 17 -- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan issued the following news release:

At Cabinet Meeting on April 17, 2026, the Government of Japan decided to dispatch a Japan Self-Defense Force (JSDF) officer to the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS).

Japan has dispatched staff officers from Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF) to UNMISS from November 2011 to the present, as well as engineering units from 2012 to 2017. Currently 4 officers are serving UNMISS as headquarters staff. In March 2026, a JGSDF officer was selected by the United Nations Secretariat as the Military Component Chief of Staff' with the end of the predecessor deployment.
