Are agricultural subsidies lowering food costs for Basotho?
Lesotho, May 20 -- Although farmers get subsidies from the government or other independent organizations, one might expect that since agricultural products are subsidized, lower food prices will be served. Unfortunately, the reality is different, food prices keep rising with impact greatly felt by the most vulnerable.
Statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security show significant differences in food prices across districts different prices vegetables: cabbage costing up to M 21.50 in Qu thing compare to M18.75 in Maseru, Onions reaching to M26.00 in Mokhotlong, much higher than M17.25 in Maseru while meat prices also costing up to M139.99 in Maseru, M156.99 in Mafeteng, M170.00 in Quthing while M145.00 in Mokhotlong.
