India, June 14 -- A 19-year-old woman died after being attacked inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, allegedly by her parents during a heated confrontation over her decision to marry a man of her choice.

The incident has triggered shock and prompted police action, with the woman's father arrested and a case registered under relevant sections.

Couple had married against family wishes

The woman, Shivani, had left home on May 18 with her neighbour Lalit Verma. The couple later married at a temple and officially registered their marriage.

Acting on a tip-off last Friday, police traced the couple in Madhya Pradesh's Satna district and brought them to Banda for questioning.
