India, July 29 -- Meta-owned WhatsApp on Tuesday announced a new feature that allows users to make and receive audio and video calls directly from their web browsers, eliminating the need to download a desktop application.

Announcing the update in a blog post, the messaging platform said users can now place and receive both one-on-one and group audio and video calls through WhatsApp Web.

"You can now make and receive audio and video calls, both one-on-one and group, directly from WhatsApp Web. No app download required," the company said.

According to WhatsApp, the feature is designed for users who rely on shared computers, work laptops that restrict software downloads, or those who simply prefer using a web browser.
