India, May 10 -- TVK chief C. Joseph Vijay has taken the oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, ushering in a historic political shift in the state.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was present at the oath ceremony.

Vijay's swearing-in marks the first non-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), non-All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government in nearly six decades.

Five days of talks to reach the majority

The 51-year-old actor-turned-politician took five days, four meetings with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, and prolonged negotiations with allies to cross the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly.

His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), won 108 seats in last month's election.
