London, Sept. 29 -- Britain is facing uncomfortable questions over its asylum and security-vetting systems after The Sunday Times reported that a former personal bodyguard of slain Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was granted refugee status in the UK and later British citizenship - before being arrested in connection with an alleged terrorist plot targeting Jewish and Israeli interests in Europe.

The man, identified only as "Mr X" because of a court order, is accused by German prosecutors of playing a central role in a plot involving the procurement and movement of firearms and ammunition for possible attacks in Germany and Austria.
