India, June 20 -- Acclaimed American television director and producer James Burrows, best known for shaping some of the most iconic sitcoms in television history, including FRIENDS, has died at the age of 85.

Burrows' family confirmed his death to PEOPLE on Friday, June 19.

"We celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of James 'Jimmy' Burrows, who passed away peacefully today surrounded by his loving family," the family said in a statement.

Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Burrows directed over 1,000 television episodes and played a pivotal role in creating some of the most celebrated sitcoms ever produced. His credits include The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Friends, Will & Grace and The Big Bang...
