India, July 1 -- The US Supreme Court has ruled that children born in the United States to parents who are unlawfully or temporarily present in the country are entitled to birthright citizenship under the Constitution, dealing a major setback to President Donald Trump's bid to end the longstanding policy through executive action.

In a 6-3 decision, the court held that such children are "citizens at birth" under the 14th Amendment, according to the BBC. The ruling effectively blocks Trump's executive order seeking to restrict birthright citizenship.

Responding to the verdict, Trump said he would pursue legislation to end birthright citizenship instead.
