India, April 19 -- At least two US nationals were detained at Srinagar Airport on Sunday after security officials recovered a satellite phone - a prohibited item - from their luggage during a routine check.
Airport security personnel questioned the individuals before handing them over to local police for further investigation.
One of the detainees was identified as Jeoffery Scot. Officials told India Today that the satellite phone recovered from his baggage was manufactured by Garmin.
According to an advisory issued by the Consulate General of India, New York, carrying or using satellite phones in India without prior approval is illegal under Section 6 of the Indian Wireless Act and Section 20 of the Indian Telegraph Act.
