In a statement, June 5 -- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has criticised China, alleging that the country is attempting to censor and erase memories of the 1989 military crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

"On June 4, the world marks 37 years since the Chinese Communist Party ordered its troops to attack thousands of peaceful demonstrators in and around Tiananmen Square."

He further added that Chinese students, workers, and other civilians who lost their lives had gathered to exercise their fundamental rights and demand democratic reforms and accountability for corruption.
