India, Feb. 28 -- Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, a key lawyer in India's historic Supreme Court verdict legalising same-sex marriage, has been nominated by the Trinamool Congress for the Rajya Sabha elections.

The party announced her candidature on X alongside Babul Supriyo, Rajeev Kumar, and Koel Mallick.

If elected, she would become the first openly queer Member of Parliament in India, marking a historic milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in the legislature.

Recently, it was Guruswamy who appeared for the TMC in legal proceedings challenging Enforcement Directorate searches at the offices of political consultancy I-PAC.
