Toronto, Sept. 4 -- Former Toronto Mayor John Tory will become chair of the Toronto International Film Festival's board on October 1, succeeding Jeffrey Remedios after five years in the role.

Tory, who served as Toronto's mayor from 2014 to 2023, was appointed by TIFF's board of directors, the festival said in a statement Thursday.

Tory previously supported TIFF during his time as mayor and served as co-chair of a campaign to build TIFF Lightbox, the festival's headquarters and cultural complex.

Remedios, the president and CEO of Republic Collective at Universal Music Group, became TIFF board chair in 2021. During his tenure, the festival underwent post-pandemic recovery, refreshed TIFF Lightbox and launched TIFF: The Market.
