Indian Railways hikes fine for ticketless travel to Rs. 500 - New rule from June 20
India, June 21 -- The Indian Railways has announced that passengers travelling without a valid ticket will now face a minimum fine of Rs.500, effective June 20. Previously, the penalty stood at Rs.250.
The revision has been implemented under the provisions of the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, officials said.
Sharing details on X, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Mumbai Central, stated: "As per the provisions of the Jan Vishwas Act, 2026, the minimum penalty under Sections 137 & 138 of the Railway Act, 1989 has been increased from Rs.250 to Rs.500 with effect from 20 June 2026."
Passengers were also urged to travel with valid tickets and comply with railway regulations to avoid penalties.
