India, Oct. 2 -- The Congress has appointed former Indian hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, replacing Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.

Pargat Singh's appointment came two days after Warring resigned from the post following months of internal differences within the Punjab unit.

The new chief, who has been an MLA since 2012, previously served as a minister in the Charanjit Singh Channi government.

A change at the top, but continuity in community representation

Pargat Singh, like Warring, is a Jat Sikh. His appointment therefore retains the same broad community representation at the top of the Punjab Congress.
