Jalpaiguri/IBNS, Sept. 22 -- In a heartwarming rescue, five fishermen saved a one-month-old elephant calf after it was swept away by the Teesta River on Monday, media reports said.

The calf was swept away after water was released from the Gajoldoba barrage in Jalpaiguri on Monday morning.

As the young elephant struggled against the strong current, the fishermen rushed to its rescue in two boats.

They travelled approximately four kilometres along the river before managing to reach the calf and pull it into one of the boats.

The fishermen later carried the calf through Gajoldoba towards the Nipania forest, where it was released near a herd of elephants.
