India, May 19 -- Indian Railways on Tuesday announced the approval of the 68-km Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project under Southern Railway at an estimated cost of Rs.993 crore, reaffirming its commitment to safer, faster, and more efficient rail transportation across the country.

The section forms a crucial part of Chennai's suburban circular rail network, connecting key transit hubs including Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project will play a vital role in easing congestion on the busy Chennai suburban rail network while significantly improving punctuality and operational efficiency.
