India, May 15 -- Petrol and diesel prices were hiked by up to Rs.3 per litre on Friday, days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to the nation to reduce fuel consumption and adopt austerity measures amid rising tensions in West Asia.

In Delhi, petrol prices were raised to Rs.97.77 per litre from Rs.94.77, while diesel rates increased to Rs.90.67 per litre from Rs.89.67, sources told Hindustan Times. However, fuel prices vary across states due to local taxes and levies.

Following the revision, petrol will now cost Rs.108.74 per litre in Kolkata.

In Mumbai, petrol prices surged by Rs.3.14 to Rs.106.68 per litre, while in Chennai, petrol now costs Rs.103.67 per litre after an increase of Rs.2.83.
