India, July 31 -- Spain is deploying a large number of troops to its North African territory of Ceuta after thousands of migrants crossed into the enclave from neighbouring Morocco on Thursday, according to media reports.

At least 15 people drowned while attempting to reach Ceuta, reports said.

Local authorities had appealed to the Spanish government for additional support following a recent surge in attempted crossings. However, chaotic scenes unfolded on Thursday as border controls appeared to collapse, the BBC reported.
