India, March 8 -- US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Britain was giving "serious thought" to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East amid the war with Iran, but added that the United States no longer needed the support to win the conflict.

The remarks mark the latest escalation in tensions between Washington and London, traditionally close military allies.

In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump said he would remember Britain's limited support during the conflict.

"The United Kingdom, our once great ally, maybe the greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East," Trump wrote.
