Mumbai/IBNS, July 8 -- The Indian stock market witnessed a sharp sell-off on Wednesday, with the BSE Sensex plunging more than 1,600 points after fresh tensions erupted in the Middle East following US President Donald Trump's declaration that the US-Iran ceasefire was over.

The NSE Nifty 50 also tumbled more than 500 points to settle below the 23,900 mark.
