India, July 10 -- State-owned telecom major BSNL is offering satellite phone service to consumers, promising to connect in situations where conventional mobile networks can't reach
The telecom provider said the phone has been designed for challenging environments, making it an ideal solution for Defence, Maritime, Disaster Response, Mining, Remote Operations and Adventure Travel.
However, these devices are highly regulated in India and cannot be procured and used by any person.
According to reports, users planning to use a satellite phone will need to get explicit authorisation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) before buying or using the phone.
