India, Sept. 30 -- The U.S. Navy has awarded Boeing a multi-billion-dollar contract to produce its next-generation F/A-XX fighter aircraft, the company announced.

The sixth-generation fighter is being developed with advanced mission systems, an open mission systems architecture, and increased operational reach and capacity. The F/A-XX is intended to replace the U.S. Navy's fleet of F/A-18 Super Hornets.

"It's an honor to be selected to produce the Navy's first sixth-generation platform," said Steve Parker, president and chief executive officer of Boeing Defense, Space & Security.
