Wanted member of Atiq gang handed to UP cops
GAYA, Oct. 6 -- Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday secured the transit remand of Mohammad Arman, an accused in the 2023 murder of advocate Umesh Pal and two policemen in Prayagraj, from Central Jail in Gaya, police said on Monday.
Police had been hunting for Arman for three years, offering a Rs.5 lakh reward for his capture, unaware thatArman was already lodged in jail in neighbouring Bihar in another case, police added.
Sources said that the UP Police have moved a local court for Arman's transit remand.
According to police officers aware of the development, Arman was recently found to be the same person the UP Police was looking for so desperately. Confirming his handover to the UP Police, Magadh IG Vikas Vaibhav said that Arman was handed over under a tight security to the team of UP Police at 5pm on Sunday.
Arman was later produced before a court in Prayagraj on Monday and the court ordered that he must be sent back to Gaya jail.
According to police, Arman, a member of late Prayagraj gangster Atiq Ahmed, was allegedly among those who killed Pal and his two police bodyguards on February 24, 2023. Among other accused in the case are Ahmed's wife, Shaista Parveen, and bomb-maker and shooter Guddu Muslim. Umesh Pal had been the key witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal who was a political opponent of Atiq Ahmed and was allegedly killed by gangster's henchmen.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage released after Umesh Pal's murder showed Arman driving a bike accompanied by Muslim, who had fled after shooting.
Police believe extracting information from Arman will lead to crucial breakthroughs regarding the gang's fugitive members, including Parveen and Muslim, a police officer said.
Arman, a resident of Kathotara Talab locality in Gaya, had fled to his home town following Pal's murder. In Gaya, a case was registered against him for a violent attack on an egg vendor identified as Bholu. Arman then surrendered to the court and since February 27, 2023, he has been lodged in Central Jail in Gaya.
The Uttar Pradesh police discovered Arman's location on September 30 and subsequently filed for transit remand on October 1.
During these proceedings, a local court rejected an application by Arman's family to allow him to appear in the Uttar Pradesh court via video-conferencing. Family members also fear that Arman might be killed in a fake encounter like many other criminals who have been killed in similar fashion by the UP Police.
Arman's father, Mohammed Shami, told local media that he feared for his son's life. "Many accused in the Umesh Pal murder case have already been killed in Police encounters. My son could be killed in a fake encounter. If an interrogation is to be conducted, it should be done via video conferencing. Mohammad Arman should not be handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Police. He is innocent," Shami said....
