Villagers in tents as Gandak floods into houses
BETTIAH, July 17 -- Amid incessant rainfall in Nepal and its catchment areas, coupled with continuous release of water from Valmikinagar barrage, villagers on Thursday were forced to spend a second day on Dhanaha-Ratwal road in Bagaha subdivision in West Champaran and other safer locations amid fears of flooding in parts of West Champaran and East Champaran districts.
Officials said the water levels in rivers continued to rise, prompting the district administrations to remain on high alert.
Thrown together from circumstances beyond their control, Alim Miyan, a resident of Rewahiya village in Madhubani block of West Champaran along with other villagers took shelter near Nainaha Dhala on Dhanaha-Ratwal road under Nadi police station area on Thursday. "We have no option but to take shelter in tents as water from the Gandak river gushed into our houses," Nirmala Devi told HT.
Madhubani's CO Nandlal Ram, contrary to the villagers' claim, said low lying areas of some villages have been inundated. "We have asked villagers in low lying areas to move to safer places."
In East Champaran, Areraj's SDM Anjali Sharma identified Sangrampur area along the Gandak river as flood prone. "We are watchful and taking precautionary steps," she said.
WRD secretary, Chandrashekhar Singh said the situation at Gandak barrage was under control and the situation was being closely monitored....
