BETTIAH, Sept. 13 -- Raghunathpur police in East Champaran arrested two constables for allegedly extorting money from local residents at a place near Motihari and threatening to implicate them in false cases if their demands were not met, police said. Motihari Sadar-1 sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Dilip Kumar said the two arrested policemen, attached with the Bike Cell of Town police station, were caught by villagers, while demanding money at Majuraha village under Raghunathpur police station on Friday evening. "On receiving information about two men being held by villagers on charges of demanding money, a police team rushed to the spot and found them to be the two constables," the SDPO said, adding those arrested have been identified as Rajeev Kumar and Ashish Kumar. "In the course of investigation, the allegation of extortion of money against them found to be true. They were indulged in this kind of act in the past too. It has also been found that on September 8, Rs.5,000 was transferred from the mobile phone of a ward councillor, Rakesh Singh, to the mobile phone of the wife of constable Rajeev Kumar," said the SDPO. Sources quoting eye-witnesses said the duo would throng the area on their bike to extort money from local, introducing themselves active members of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by East Champaran's superintendent of police and extort money from the local holding out the threat to implicate them in false cases. "On the suspicion on being conmen who are fleecing money posing as policemen, the local caught and thrashed them before calling the police," said a local. Video footage from the spot showed two constables surrounded by villagers, who grabbed and manhandled them. Some villagers were also seen punching and hitting the policemen.
