Top Maoist Misir Besra spotted in Tonto; 18 more ultras may surrender tomorrow
JAMSHEDPUR, July 27 -- In what could be a fatal blow to the Maoist insurgency in Jharkhand, about 18-20 extremists from the banned LWE outfit CPI (Maoist) are expected to surrender and lay their guns before the Jharkhand police on Tuesday in Ranchi even as intelligence input indicated that Rs.2 crore Maoist politburo member Misir Besra was spotted in the Kolhan jungles under Tonto police station (PS) and Rs.1 crore Maoist central committee member (CCM) Asim Mondal being spotted within Boram PS limits, officials said on Sunday.
"A very good news and major success in our battle against the Maoists is forthcoming shortly. All preparation are going on and in most likelihood nearly 18-20 Maoists will surrender before the state DGP Tadasha Mishra in Ranchi on Tuesday. The back one of the Maoists have been broken and the response to our 'Ooeration Navjivan' has been very effective and inspiring," a very top ranking police officer of Jharkhand told HT on Sunday.
Police sources said that the Jharkhand inspector general (IG, operation) Narendra Kumar Singh was busy giving the final touches to the preparation for the mass-surrender of the Naxals again.
On May 21 last, 27 Maoists, including 25 from the Misir Besra and Asim Mondal led squads in Saranda Forests had surrendered before the DGP in Ranchi. They had laid down 16 weapons and 2857 cartridges. Two JJMP extremists had also surrendered that day.
"A regional committee member (RCM) ranking Maoist carrying a bounty of Rs.15 lakh, zonal committee member ZCM carrying a bounty of Rs.10 lakh and several Maoists with Rs.5 lakh and Rs.2 lakh rewards are likely to be among the 16 Maoists from the West Singhbhum and East Singhbhum district of Kolhan Division," a senior police officer said. Meanwhile, intelligence inputs reported that the topmost Maoist leader in Jharkhand Misir Besra alias Nirbhay was spotted in the hilly jungles near Murumbura village under the Tonto PS limits in West Singhbhum district on July 9 last.
"Misir Besra was accompanied by RCM Mochu alias Mehnat and Virendra Hansda in Kolhan jungles and deeply forested hillocks in West Singhbhum district on July 9 last. Similarly, Maoist CCM Asim Mondal, RCM Ram Prasad Mardi alias Sachin and Ravi Singh Sardar were spotted with their squad near Jarki village close to the West Bengal borders under the Boram PS in East Singhbhum district on July 9 last. Another Maoist squad led by ZCM Saluka Kayam along with Rahat, Rita, Pinky and Kodomunni were spotted in the hilly jungles near Nachalda and Kedabir villages under the Sonua PS in West Singhbhum district on May 26," an intelligence officer said.
He said that Maoist commanders Nitesh and Sanjay alias Godram were spotted near Lamba and Dumariya villages under the Chatarpur PS in Palamu on December 12, 2025....
