top court seeks response in Darbhanga ponds project
DARBHANGA, April 14 -- The Supreme Court on Monday took serious note of alleged soil filling, encroachment, and ongoing construction activities around three historic ponds in Darbhanga, issuing notices to the authorities concerned and seeking their response.
Hearing writ petition (civil) No. 362 of 2026 by Talab Bachao Abhiyan (TBA), a bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta expressed concern over what it described as "systematic interference" with the water bodies-Gangasagar, Digghi, and Harahi-and listed the matter for hearing on short notice, fixing May 2, 2026, as the next date.
"The court strongly reprimanded the authorities while seeking their response," informed advocate Kamlesh Kumar Mishra, who appeared on behalf of the petitioner.
The petition, argued by advocate Mishra along with advocates Renu and Swagat, alleges that the work is being carried out by state agencies, particularly the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO), in violation of environmental norms and prior judicial directions.
According to the plea, large-scale dumping of soil and construction activities have continued despite orders of the National Green Tribunal, the Patna HC, and Supreme Court. It seeks an immediate halt to the works, removal of encroachments, and restoration of the ponds to their original water spread and boundaries.
