PATNA, Aug. 14 -- Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, along with party MLAs and MLCs, will take out a march from the state party office to Bihar Lok Bhawan on August 19 to demand action against Siwan Superintendent of Police (SP) and other officials over the police firing on student demonstrators in Siwan on July 25 during the Bihar bandh. Yadav announced the march at a press conference in New Delhi on Wednesday, alleging that the state administration was trying to cover up the police brutality during the students' protest in Siwan by suspending only one constable who had allegedly fired at the demonstrators with his AK-47 assault rifle. "The use of an AK-47 to control a student protest was totally unwarranted. We want strict action to be taken against the SP, Siwan, and other officials who allowed such brutal methods to be used to control a student demonstration," Yadav said. Meanwhile, the ruling JD(U) and NDA allies termed the proposed protest march over the police firing on protesters in Siwan a ploy to gain publicity and remain relevant in state politics. "Bihar government has already started an inquiry into the Siwan incident and due action will be taken against erring officials. But Tejashwi taking out a march over an incident that happened weeks ago only reflects how the opposition leader is now trying to make himself relevant in state politics at a time when his own party is facing a rift within its ranks," said Neeraj Kumar, JD(U) MLC. Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) chief and MP Upendra Kushwaha also dismissed the proposed protest march as a publicity stunt.
