PATNA, July 27 -- Former Bihar minister and chief of Janshakti Janata Dal Tej Pratap Yadav, also the elder son of RJD supremo and senior Bihar leader Lalu Prasad, was sent to 14-day judicial custody on Sunday following his arrest late on Saturday, police said. Yadav was arrested for his presence in Saturday's Bihar bandh protests and on charges that he allegedly "incited" protesters whose actions resulted in damage to public property. The Bihar bandh call was given by Left-oriented organisation such as the All India Student Association (AISA) over the NEET leak issue and for resignation of former education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. At around 12:15 am (on Sunday), Patna police brought Tej Pratap from the Naubatpur police station and produced him before a judicial magistrate at his residence in Chhaju Bagh, Patna. The JM sent Yadav to the Beur Central Jail of Patna for 14 days of judicial custody. This is the first time Yadav, who floated his outfit in 2005 and has been known for his occasional unruly behaviour and is also embroiled in a domestic strife issue with his estranged wife, has been sent to jail in his political career spanning over a decade. According to Tej Pratap Yadav's lawyer Jagannath Singh, is client was arrested from a Patna mall around 7.30pm on Saturday. He was held for his participation in the Bihar bandh-related demonstrations. The JJD chief was seen leading a demonstration at Ram Ghulam Chowk near Gandhi Maidan where he also purportedly climbed on the Jaya Prakash Narayan statue near gate number 10 of the Gandhi Maidan with a tricolour in his hand. He was later detained by the police at the Gandhi Maidan police station, police officials said. "I am with the students and ready to die for their rights," he had said. Later, he was released after a few hours of detention. An FIR was subsequently registered against the JJD chief at Gandhi Maidan Police Station, police said. Hours after Yadav's detention and release, the Patna police re-arrested Yadav in the late evening and took him to the Naubatpur police station. Patna SSP Kartikeya Sharma said that Yadav was arrested on charges of rioting and accused of provoking demonstrators. During the protests many policemen were injured in the clash and stone pelting in Patna yesterday. Earlier, Tej Pratap Yadav's supporters accused the Patna Police of withholding information about his whereabouts and failing to disclose the charges under which he was being detained following his arrest. JJD workers alleged that Yadav was arrested by the Patna police because the state government had become jittery after the JJD chief decided to support Prashant Kishore, the Jan Suraaj Party founder and a candidate from the Bankipur seat in the by-election on Friday. On Saturday, the JJD chief had also made a X post inviting Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke to visit Bihar to help in "dislodging the NDA government". Meanwhile, Tejashwi Yadav, Tej Pratap's younger brother and RJD working president, who returned to the city after a long vacation abroad, flew into a rage upon learning about the arrest of "my big brother". "My big brother has been arrested wrongfully, and booked under false charges. I have learnt that a number of MLAs of my party have also been rounded up for supporting the bandh. The BJP-led government in Bihar is hereby warned to withdraw all the cases against bandh supporters, else we shall launch a massive stir," said Yadav, who is the leader of the opposition in the state assembly. He claimed that it was appalling that such coercive action was being taken in Bihar even though the government at the Centre had agreed to withdraw all cases against the protesters in Delhi. "The chief minister (Samrat Choudhary), who enjoys no popular sentiment and is himself named in criminal cases, must come to his senses. I have also heard that AK47 rifles were pointed at bandh supporters," the RJD leader said. Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor, who is engaged in a fierce electoral battle with the BJP in the bypoll to the Bankipur assembly seat, vacated by the saffron party's national president Nitin Nabin, claimed that Tej Pratap Yadav was "being targeted for supporting me"....
