PURNEA, Aug. 27 -- Five people were killed and one was seriously injured when a speeding car lost control and hit six people who were chanting religious prayers (kirtan) at a roadside temple in Bihar's Supaul district late Tuesday night, police said. The incident took place at Kataiya Chowk on National Highway-327E under the jurisdiction of Pipra police station, ahead of Sri Krishnashtami, one of the most popular festivals in the Kosi and Seemanchal regions. Following the incident, agitated locals blocked the NH, demanding the immediate arrest of the driver and adequate compensation for the bereaved families. Surendra Yadav, Tilo Yadav and Raju Das, aged between 45 and 60, died on the spot, while Bindeshwari Yadav and Krishna Mohan Sah, both in their 50s, died during treatment at a hospital. Ramchandra Yadav is undergoing treatment at JNKT Medical College and Hospital in Madhepura and is stated to be in critical condition. "All the bodies have been sent to the district hospital for postmortem," Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Saurabh Gupta said, adding that the car, which also hit a garage, has been seized and a hunt has been launched to arrest the driver. District Magistrate (DM) Sawan Kumar, who also rushed to the site, assured the people of all possible assistance to the bereaved families. "The guilty won't be spared," he said. Hundreds of people blocked NH-327E near Kataiya Chowk for hours on Tuesday night and agreed to lift the blockade only after police and administrative officials intervened and assured them that the driver would be arrested soon. Eyewitnesses said the car was travelling at a speed of more than 150 km per hour and that the driver failed to control the vehicle, hitting the people who were chanting prayers at the roadside temple. "There were six persons and the car hit all of them," locals said, expressing fears that the injured man might not survive. They also alleged that the driver was under the influence of liquor.
